Definition of Brain imagingIn addition to magnetic resonance imaging that is based on the absorption by the brain of electromagnetic radiation, brain images can be acquired by scintillation counting (scintigraphy) of radiation emitted from radioactive nuclei that have crossed the blood-brain barrier. The introduction of radionuclides into brain tissue is accomplished with the use of specific 99mTc(V) complexes with lipophilic ligands. See also imaging.
