Definition of captodative effect

  1. Effect on the stability of a carbon centred radical determined by the combined action of a captor (electron withdrawing) and a dative (electron releasing) substituent, both attached to the radical centre. The term is also used for certain unsaturated compounds. BORDWELL and LYNCH (1989); SUSTMANN and KORTH (1990); VIEHE, JANOUSEK, MERENY, and STELLA (1985).
