Definition of Catalase

  1. A hemeprotein (EC 1.11.1.6), which catalyzes the disproportionation of dihydrogen peroxide to O2 and water ; it also catalyzes the oxidation of other compounds, such as ethanol, by dihydrogen peroxide. A non-heme protein containing a dinuclear manganese cluster with catalase activity is often called pseudocatalase.
