Definition of coupling constant

1. the separation between the peaks of a first-order multiplet produced as a result of spin-orbit coupling .  The larger the value of J, the greater the coupling between the nuclei.  J is usually measured in Hertz, and is not dependant on the operating frequency of the instrument.
