1. for silicon crystals, a chemical or structural irregularity that degrades the ideal silicon crystal structure or the thin films built over the silicon wafer. 2 : a pit, tear, groove, inclusion, grain boundary, or other surface feature that is either characteristic of the material or a result of its processing and that is not a result of the sample preparation.
