Definition of Ostwald ripening

  1. coarsening in crystal structures;  it is an inherent property of crystals at a solid-liquid interface.  The coarsening and enlarging of crystals at surfaces is driven by a thermodynamic driving force to reduce the surface to volume ratio;  this in turn lowers the interfacial or line energy.
