Definition of xanthene dyes

1. Dyes derived by condensation of phthalic anhydride with resorcinol (and derivatives) or m-aminophenol (and derivatives), of which fluorescein is the prototype (all such dyes have the xanthene nucleus). See also phthaleins, rhodamine dyes.
