Does anyone know any mnemonic devices for memorizing functional group structures?
I have maybe 8 or so memorized, but I find mnemonic devices tend to provide much better accuracy over the long term, for remembering things.
I also happen to be good with numbers, so I've been toying with the idea of using numbers to describe different parts of them and memorizing the numbers.
As an example:
1 = R, R', or R"
2 = C-O double bond in carbonyl
3 = H
4 = single bonded O
5 = N
etc...
Then for say, a ketone, you'd have 121, or an ether would be 131. Alcohol would be 143, an amide might be 12511 and so on
But I figure others have been probably been down this road and might have better ones.
