Lewis structures are named after the physical chemist Gilbert Newton Lewis. He invented them; I don't know the details of how and why he did so. They are a two dimensional way to draw molecules in which the electrons and bonds are depicted by dots and lines.

Lewis dot stuctures and hybridization are approx. of the bonding formula that match the reality. The calculations are including bond lengths, angles, atomic charges ,the dipole moment, bond orders, and molecular orbital energies. The best way to described this bonding is presented by formal electron pair localised bond and the hybridizationof the atomic orbitals used to form these localised bonds.
