Hi, soo i'm new to this forum and trying it out! I'm working on a "starburst" problem. It's a question that has a bunch of different steps, some reagents given and some compounds given, and we have to fill in the blanks. Right now, I'm stuck on the following part:
UNKNOWN COMPOUND +HCl, H20, heat -> p-toluic acid. I don't know a synthesis of carboxylic acids that involves HCl and H20. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply. I don't come here very often, but it sounds like it's an acid catalyzed hydrolysis of an ester into a carboxylic acid.

RCO0R' + acid + H2O -> RCOOH + R'OH
