In the addition of hydrochloric acid to 2-butyne produces (E)-2-chloro-2-butene.

In the second addition, two products could be produced:

1) 2,2-dichlorobutane

or

2) 2,3-dichlorobutane

According to my organic chemistry book, only the first will be produced. I don't understand this being how in either process a the intermediate state involves a secondary carbocation. Why should one be more stable than the other?

(Apparently, this has something to do with resonance).
