Historically copper ions (2+) were reported as tetrahydrated ( 4 water molecules in a square planar arrangement around the central copper ion). Later it has been shown to be hexahydrated (an octahedral arrangement of water molecules). However, when ammonia is used as a ligand, the product is described as 4 ammonia molecules and two water molecules. My question is - does this mean there are two isomeric forms of this complex ion - one in which the water molecules share a side of the octahedron and one where they dont? If so do they have different absorption spectra, enthalpy changes etc.? Would love to know
