two (di) units (mer) coming together to make one new molecule

for example AlCl3 tends to dimerise and exists as Al2Cl6 in the solid state

NO2 gas dimerises at lower temperature to make N2O4

A trimer would be three units and a tetramer would be four units (and yes, they do exist)

Taken to its ultimate extension a polymer has many (number unspecified) units the same joined together to make one molecule

ethene (monomer = 1 unit) --> polyethene (many units)
nCH2=CH2 --> (CH2-CH2)n
