I would like to know why are there only two elements in period one of the periodic table, while there are 8 and more in other groups? Confused,Mr N.S Nxumalo in S.A

because the K-scale is full with 2 electrons. Thus period 1 has only 2 elements, the element with 1 electron in the K-scale (H) and the element that has 2 electrons in the K-scale (He). Hence, the 2nd period has eight elements, since the L-scale is full with 8 electrones this goes till there are d-orbitals filled first ( 4th period).

What is the "K scale"?

The first energy level of an atom has no p-orbitals, so only two electrons fit (in the s-orbital). The second and succeeding energy levels do have three p-orbitals each, each of which can hold two electrons. Read up on these things in your general chemistry and/or quantum mechanical textbooks (or take these classes).
